So sweet and full of flavor — each cupcake is rich enough in vanilla that anyone would be able to taste it. This is a recipe you really have to try for yourself. The cake of the cupcake is paired with a vanilla cream cheese frosting, which complements it really nicely. Even a plain cream cheese frosting would work beautifully with these cupcakes too.
This one's kind of sneaky and a little difficult too, depending on your current dietary preference. If you're vegetarian, it's likely that a large portion of your diet is attributed to grains and beans like quinoa, rice, and lentils. According to Smith, these foods contain too many carbohydrates and not enough protein to make them foundational foods for following a keto diet. So instead of eating a quinoa bowl or a stir-fry on a bed of white rice, try making a keto-friendly vegetarian lasagna (head to our sister site MyDomaine for the recipe).
Conveniently located to Johnson City, Kingsport, and Bristol in Gray, TN just off Interstate 26 at the Bobby Hicks Highway exit 13. We are right beside of Taco Bell. I am a 59-year-old wife and mother of two grown children. I love your idea of fixing a lot of meals ahead of time and then pulling one out, put it in the crockpot, and you have dinner when you get home. I hate feeling rushed when I cook so Monday - Friday I use those crockpot meals and make enough that we have lunch the next day. I take Sunday afternoon, fix up what I need for the week (I don't have a lot of freezer space so I do a week's worth at a time) and I'm done with it! Saturdays I like to try new recipes from some of my cookbooks which I am finding I can freeze as well! So you have shown me a whole new way to organize my time and still put a healthy meal on the table. Thanks so much and I look forward to future blogs.
“There is no secret. The only thing that I did differently was stay committed. I made a promise to myself not to give up and even when I wanted to quit, or when I messed up I just kept pushing. I took on a low-carb diet and started to run consistently. I also joined a weight loss clinic named Transform Institute, which gave me the tools and support that I needed.”
Instead of Butter use Coconut Oil or Vegan Butter. Coconut oil has a slightly lower melting point than butter and the same smoke point as butter, which makes it a good butter replacement. If you are not a fan of the flavor of coconut oil, look for vegan butter in your local health food store. Make sure the vegan butter doesn’t contain any hydrogenated oils because these oils increase the risk of heart disease tremendously.
The moment I walked into Samantha’s office and started talking to her I knew I found what I was searching for. I had realistic goals and I was willing to put in the time and effort to lose the weight the healthy way. Samantha was fantastic. She was able to relate to my personal story and actively listened to me. She shared her background with me and I could tell she was confident she could help me achieve my fitness goals. We worked out a plan together and when I left her studio that night I felt that a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I had confidence that I was going to get the results I wanted and it felt wonderful to regain control. I realized that I had made a change from feeling sorry for myself to being empowered and taking control over my habits again. I was truly energized and so excited to put my plan into action with Samantha’s guidance! Over the next three months I underwent the biggest transformation of my life as I worked out with one of Samantha’s personal trainers, Chris Williams, only three days a week. I completely kicked my dependence on food for comfort as I followed Samantha’s inspiration and incorporating healthy food into my life. I saw immediate results both in my physical appearance and in the way I felt. Each week as I saw the pounds melting away, it gave me even more inspiration to work harder. I was transforming my lifestyle and that was a key attribute to my success.
If you have a tendency to overeat at cocktail parties, "choose a non-caloric beverage when first arriving, and delay eating anything until you've had a chance to look over all the choices," suggests Lorraine Matthews-Antosiewicz, MS, RD, a food and nutrition expert in New Jersey. By scoping out what's available, you can determine which indulgent treats you want to splurge on and which lean, filler foods will help fill you up. Holding a low-calorie beverage in one hand and a bag in the other will prevent you from mindlessly grazing. "Select one or two hors d'oeuvres that you really want and then wait until the cocktail hour is almost over before putting them on your plate, especially if a meal is to follow," says Matthews-Antosiewicz. You will have to set down what you are holding to fill your plate, which will keep you mindful about what, and how much, you're eating.
Despite the vegetarian diet's links to weight loss, it is possible for vegetarians to be overweight. That's because vegetarian diets, with their focus on fruits and vegetables, tend to be more carb-heavy and fat-deficient than other diets. Science has shown that overloading on carbs and sugars can lead to weight gain, and considering protein's positive effects on satiety and metabolism, skimping on the nutrient can also cause pounds to pile on.
Vegetable-sourced iron, known as non-heme iron, is harder to absorb than heme iron, which is found in animal products. This is why iron levels can plummet even when a plant-based dieter eats iron-rich foods like Swiss chard, nuts, and seeds. It’s wise, then, for vegan keto eaters to add a vegan-based iron supplement to their diets. This goes double for women, who lose some iron every month through menstruation. For women 19–50, 18mg of iron per day is recommended.
Here, we’ve broken down our protein grocery list into animal and plant sourced — so depending on where on the plant-based eating spectrum you find yourself, you have ample choices available. If you go for soy products, try to stick to non-GMO and organic options, and pick ones that are fermented as they are even more abundant in nutrients (think organic tempeh).
Another food you'll find to be a good source of protein on your vegetarian keto diet is cheese, which I'm sure you could have guessed. Cheese comes in a variety of of textures, tastes and colors, but don't let this delicious ingredient fool you -it'll help you hit your protein goals! One thing to note, however, is the varying carb count in different cheeses. It ranges from a low .10 net carbs per 1 oz serving of Gruyere cheese to a higher 1.5 net carbs per 1 oz serving of Swiss cheese.
The best option is to, of course, read your nutrition labels thoroughly and track your nutrients using one of the apps mentioned here. For vegetables or foods that you pick up at the farmer's market or other food that lacks nutritional information, this spreadsheet covers the carb count for a huge number of foods and drinks. This spreadsheet will save you so much time.
When you are following a vegetarian keto meal plan, though, Palmer recommends focusing mostly on whole foods. Not only will those help you hit your nutrient checkboxes, but they're also rich in slow-digesting carbs and help maintain energy levels longer. And as with any healthy diet, you should avoid processed foods and refined carbs and sugars, which are stripped of important nutrients that prevent sugar from being absorbed into the bloodstream too quickly. (Not sure which drinks are keto-approved? Check out this list.)
I learned that I don’t need to be obsessive about exercise or my diet in order to lose weight. I learned how to balance the amount of food I eat with the amount of exercise that I do. I have so much more control of my body now. I feel empowered. I feel that I can continue to monitor myself and continue to lose weight. I’m looking forward to the day when I can fit into the size I wore in college! Thank you Samantha, for teaching me how to find balance.
Still, Mass is hesitant to endorse this way of consuming. “I don’t see many blessings to going keto vegetarian,” she says. The main challenge is dietary deficiencies. As Medline Plus notes, vegetarians already are liable to being deficient in vitamin B12, vitamin D, zinc, iron, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. Keto then puts extra regulations in vicinity, further growing the probability of being deficient in a number of those vitamins. For instance, breakfast cereals, which are commonly rich in vitamin B12, aren’t allowed on keto.
I’m getting a little bored with my food choices, so I’m going to have to get better about planning ahead and making more interesting food choices for myself. WoMan cannot live on smoothies and salads alone. I mean, I can, but I don’t want to. I really do love my smoothies, I just get hungry pretty quick, when I have them for breakfast. I do love salad, but definitely can’t do them as a meal every day.
A 2017 study, published in the Journal of Nutrition, found meal timing had an impact on BMI. Researchers noted those with the lowest BMIs tended to fast for more than 18 hours between supper and breakfast, eat breakfast and plan for their largest meal first thing in the morning. (In comparison, those with shorter fasting periods between supper and breakfast, breakfast skippers and those who ate their largest meals at supper had higher BMIs).
This makes my life so much easier. I'm a busy work at home/stay at home mom, wife, business woman and I feel like dinner is always the thing I just never get time to do. We have done like 15 of the crockpot recipes from Sarah and they are all very yummy. They get a thumbs up from my husband and kids every time. And there is always enough for my husband to take the left overs at least 2x per recipe. I have a family of 5, 2 adults, 21, 13, 16. So it makes plenty. Thank you Sarah.
One big reason people go keto is sustained energy. When you don’t eat copious amounts of carbs, levels of insulin—the hormone that controls blood sugar—remain much steadier than they do on the carbohydrate-based diet most people are used to. When your blood sugar is stable, you don’t have afternoon energy crashes that make you want to fall asleep at your desk. A study in the Annals of Internal Medicine showed that a ketogenic diet controlled blood sugar more effectively than a more standard, low-calorie diet that was high in carbs.
Fat is important on the keto diet, but especially so if you are vegan or vegetarian. “Aim to get 75 percent or more of your calories from plant-based fats like coconut oil, coconut cream/butter, MCT oil, olive oil, avocado, and—in lesser amounts—nuts and seeds,” says Dr. Axe. “Keep nut and seed consumption to about 1/4 cup per day (or two tablespoons of nut butter), since these do provide some carbs and can also be hard to digest in large amounts.” To help with absorption of minerals, he recommends soaking or sprouting nuts first.
Dr. Axe recommends getting no more than 20 percent of your daily calories from plant-based sources of proteins, since eating too much protein will interfere with ketosis. “Most beans and legumes will contribute too many carbs to your diet and too little protein,” he says. “The best sources of low-carb protein are plant-based protein powders (like hemp, brown rice, or pea protein) and fermented soy products like tempeh.” Other plant-based sources of protein in your diet can include nutritional yeast, nuts and seeds, and even vegetables.
Vitamin D - Vitamin D is another essential vitamin for the body, which uses it for many tasks. Vitamin D is required to move your muscles, fire your neurons, and fight off foreign pathogens. It also helps the body absorb calcium, aiding in the strengthening of bones. Vitamin D might also help combat depression. Unfortunately, it is also nearly exclusively derived from animal products.

I’ll admit I’m much more of a savory breakfast person. I love getting the day off to a great start with a delicious, filling recipe. This avocado is one of my absolute favorites. I’ll eat it practically any time of day and for any meal or snack. It’s got a great combination of tanginess from the balsamic, savory smoky, salty bacon flavor and the rich, smooth and satisfying avocado. Give this combination a taste and I promise you’ll love it too!
"Before I finally made a phone call to Samantha, I had seen her articles and advertisements in our local paper for several years! During those years, I gained about 10 pounds each year with a combination of bad eating habits, a stressful job and no exercise. At the beginning of last year I went on a cruise with my mother and when I got back I looked at the photos we took. I could not believe the person in the photos was me - how had I become so out of shape? I thought I didn't have time to work out but Samantha convinced me that I had to make time and also make the changes in my eating habits to become healthy and lose weight. The time I have spent with Samantha has been one of the best investments I've made in my life - she has inspired me to eat healthier and how to work out effectively to lose the fat I needed to lose without losing muscle. She has shown me a way that I can follow for the rest of my life. I have gone from a size 14 to a size 4 in 7 months and I've lost over 138 inches all over my entire body! I feel better and have more energy than I have in years. I encourage you to give her a call today - don't waste another day! You can do it too with her help."
Because different plant foods contain different types of amino acids, in excluding all animal products, vegans come to rely on a combination of grains, legumes, and seeds to get all of the essential amino acids their bodies need. Many of these foods are too high in carbs to be included on a keto diet, which is usually restricted to 20 grams of net carbs (total carbs minus fiber) per day. However, those who want to avoid all animal products can follow a lower-carb, non-keto vegan diet, such as the “Eco-Atkins” diet.
The easiest way to combat this loss of electrolytes is to add tons of salt to your food while making sure you're drinking plenty of water. I have also heard of people that take a "shot" of saltwater as a faster alternative. To do this, just take a pinch of salt and put it into a glass of water and chug it. It's not fun, but it gets the job done. If you want something a little more palatable, there is a drink that people like to make that they call “keto-aid.” Here’s what you do:
I like to cook dinner pretty much every night. Cooking is something that I really enjoy, and as I’m always working on new vegan keto recipes, it kind of just makes sense to test them every chance I get. Of course, there are nights that I just don’t feel like cooking, so I like to have some options available that I can just heat up and dig into without much fuss. This recipe for vegan keto sloppy joes really fits the bill there. It makes six servings in one go, so you can have dinner ready to go every day without more than 1 hour of effort. 🙂 (more…)
Great question. Since a vegan diet is even more restricted in terms of low-carb foods, keto as a vegan is highly impractical and takes a lot more thought. However, you can still consume plenty of fats if you stick to healthy oils, nuts/nut butters, avocados, seeds/seed butters, and coconut as your sources while making sure you get enough protein too.
Common side effects of Saxenda® include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, headache, vomiting, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), decreased appetite, upset stomach, tiredness, dizziness, stomach pain, and changes in enzyme (lipase) levels in your blood. Nausea is most common when first starting Saxenda®, but decreases over time in most people as their body gets used to the medicine. Tell your health care professional if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.
If you want to add a little variety of breakfast so it’s not always about eggs and you’re in the mood for some texture, this low-carb cinnamon cereal is the ideal keto breakfast to dig into. There’s something about plunging that round spoon into a cold, creamy bowl of milk and picking up crisp little squares that’ll transport you straight back to childhood. Make a big batch and store it in an air-tight jar so that the rest of the week’s breakfasts are a breeze. It’ll stay crunchy for about as long as a regular breakfast cereal.
