I’m trying a new(ish) tactic, where I build in cheat days, trying to keep my metabolism guessing a little.  On those cheat days, I eat whatever I want without overstuffing myself and I drink soda, too if I want to.  That helps me feel like I’m not totally depriving myself the whole time.  I can already tell that I do eat so much healthier as an overall whole, than I used to.  I was getting into some seriously bad habits of snacking on sweets, carbs and soda any time I wanted to, without thinking of the consequences.  The only problem was that those wants were getting more and more frequent.  The desire for sugar seemed to be growing, the more I gave myself sugar.

Hi Tom, thanks for your comment. Carrots and onions are okay in a keto diet as long as they are eaten in moderation. Obviously, I am not saying this chili should be eaten everyday if you are on keto. It is fine if you are having it once in a while and watching your carb intake throughout the day. The canned tomatoes I used do not have any added sugar or additives so that is okay. My wife and I decided to see Samantha early in 2006 because we decided that it was time for a change. Hey Jamie, great to hear that you’re going keto!! As far as lentils go, what are the different types you’re referring too? In terms of the protein shake, yes you can definitely have a protein shake as long as it’s low in carbs and you are adding enough fat to it – having a bunch of protein at once could hinder your ability to get and stay in ketosis so you always want to pair protein with fat to minimize the blood sugar response.


Vegans have long known that they can’t get all the amino acids they need from one source of plant protein, so they make an effort to eat a diverse selection of them and often combine foods in the same meal to get a complimentary assortment of aminos. You don’t need to do this at every meal—your body can hold on to the aminos from one food a few hours until you eat another food with aminos that complement them and form a complete protein. But don’t get in the habit of basing your meals around only tofu or only hemp. Eat as broad a menu as you can to ensure the richest nutritional intake you can. I am a 59-year-old wife and mother of two grown children.  I love your idea of fixing a lot of meals ahead of time and then pulling one out, put it in the crockpot, and you have dinner when you get home.  I hate feeling rushed when I cook so Monday - Friday I use those crockpot meals and make enough that we have lunch the next day.  I take Sunday afternoon, fix up what I need for the week (I don't have a lot of freezer space so I do a week's worth at a time) and I'm done with it!  Saturdays I like to try new recipes from some of my cookbooks which I am finding I can freeze as well!  So you have shown me a whole new way to organize my time and still put a healthy meal on the table.  Thanks so much and I look forward to future blogs.
Using a flax seed egg is the perfect vegan substitution when a recipe calls for an egg. Simply combine 1 tablespoon of ground flax seed meal with 3 tablespoons of water and let sit at room temperature for a least 15 minutes. For every egg a recipe calls for, you will need to use this ratio, so if you need 3 eggs, use 3 tablespoons of flax meal and 9 tablespoons of water.
Regardless of whether or not you can process gluten, seitan is very high in carbs. I don’t touch it. Also, beans or any fruit other than a few berries. Certainly not a tennis ball worth of fruit and under no circumstances a hockey puck worth of carbs!! Also, if it weren’t for heavy whipping cream, cream cheese and butter, I’d have a terrible time getting the fat and calories I need, so 2 dice worth is no dice. If I followed this advice I would never be in ketosis. I think the author needs more experience.
I have been Keto few months as non-meat eater. Using blood keystones meter not reaching therapeutic Keto & not able to develop muscle. Daily intermittent fasting, so 2 meals/day. Trying to lose some wt. Exercise. Inputting macros. My mercury hi so don’t want to eat tons of fish. Eat dairy. I’m smallish female. Keeping carbs < 25, protein 55, fats 60-65. Kcal 1000ish. Worried about no muscle. What to do?

And it could be especially startling for vegetarians. Fort Lauderdale, Florida–based Jaime Mass, RDN, founder of Jaime Mass Nutritionals, LLC, says vegetarians commonly become “pasta-tarians.” Instead of replacing meat with healthy plant-based foods and whole grains, many load up on pasta, crackers, and other carb-heavy items. Transitioning to keto could be difficult for these pasta-tarians, but it could also be beneficial in helping them cut back on processed carbs.
My weight loss has definitely slowed like it normally does after the first 2 weeks, but I also think I was getting a little too comfortable with my cheat days.  I let them happen more frequently than I should have.  So now, going into the month of February, I’ll be more diligent about not cheating unless it’s the right day, rather than just deciding on a whim to have a cheat day, just because I wanted what everyone else was having.  I’m going to be traveling to Breckenridge, Colorado for a ski trip this month, so I’m sure that the trip will be difficult on me.  At least, I’ll probably burn a lot of it while I’m skiing. #ketoacidosis
