For those already following a vegan diet, it can be especially hard to adapt to a low carb, high-fat diet. But once you know a few good substitutions, and have some amazing new vegan keto recipes under your belt, it doesn’t have to be difficult to eat well on a vegan keto diet. I’ve compiled 20 of my favorite plant-based keto recipes below to give you a head start!
You conscientiously check food labels, but do you pay attention to serving sizes? (You don't have to answer that.) Rachel Beller, M.S., R.D., and nutritionist on NBC's The Biggest Loser, calls for a "reality check" when it comes to reading serving sizes on packaging. "Many cereals have a serving size of half a cup or two-thirds of a cup, but no one sticks to a measly half a cup of cereal." She suggests limiting yourself to single-cup servings that don't exceed 200 calories. Make measuring cups your new BFFs, and resist the temptation to let em overflow.
I’ve also heard some of my vegan friends say that they’re going to give a keto lifestyle a try to help them lose weight. Personally, Travis and I don’t follow a vegan keto diet, we just live a very simple and easy vegan lifestyle and eat whatever we want (within reason). However, I wanted to put together a list of vegan keto recipes to help anyone thinking about trying a keto diet this year.
Heat a non stick pan over medium high heat and add 5 tsp of ghee to it. When the ghee becomes hot, roll the spinach leaves in the dry mixture to coat the leaves and start putting them in the hot ghee. Cover the pain with a lid and cook for 5 minutes. Turn the leaves and cook from other side for another 5 minutes. Remove the spinach pakoras and serve hot.

Start taking note of your diet-ruining trigger situations and you'll be able to stop them from ruining your diet.
If you have bad memories of being yelled at for not finishing everything on your plate, forget them. "Stopping before you're full is better for your health," says Ericka Stachura, R.D., a registered dietitian in Boston. That's because it takes 20 minutes for our stomachs to tell our brains that we're full; leaving food on the plate allows your brain to play catch-up. Also, when dining out, consider sharing an entree with a friend—portion sizes are often way larger than the recommended size for one person. You'll still feel satisfied. Promise.
There are other side effects as well when your body is first adjusting, like difficulty focusing, flu-like symptoms (keto flu), drowsiness, frequent urination, constipation, diarrhea, and reduced strength and physical performance. Most of these symptoms occur mainly in the first few days, while others can come and go depending upon how many electrolytes you are getting and your macronutrient intake.
is anyone thinking here about actually ‘being in ketosis’? Isn’t that part of it – no matter what is put together on a sample menu – i thought you had to have equipment and measure whether you are actually ‘in’ ketosis and also measuring the carbs to assist with this. Then and only then (at least as i understand it) does the weight loss begin. Correct? Can these keto stix etc. not be purchased at the pharmacy?

Red Palm Oil. Being an incredible source of Vitamins A and E, red palm oil doubles as a vitamin supplement. It has a mild carrot-like flavor and a rich, buttery texture. You’ll find that cooking with it can enhance the flavor of your vegan meat, nuts, and seeds. Caution: When buying palm oil, however, you must be extremely careful because many of these products are made in a way that devastates the wildlife and their environment. If you do want to add red palm oil to your keto diet, make sure you only buy RSPO-certified or Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO) products.
Fresh vegetables. Veggies are full of fiber and nutrients, so if you enjoy them, your keto journey will be much easier. Some vegetables have tons of versatility, like cauliflower, which can be blended into a rice alternative, cut up and baked as fake wings, mashed to make “mashed potatoes,” etc. Other great veggies for keto are mushrooms, romaine lettuce, spaghetti squash, and broccoli. Paired with the seasonings and ingredients above, you can make some awesome meals.
I’m trying a new(ish) tactic, where I build in cheat days, trying to keep my metabolism guessing a little. On those cheat days, I eat whatever I want without overstuffing myself and I drink soda, too if I want to. That helps me feel like I’m not totally depriving myself the whole time. I can already tell that I do eat so much healthier as an overall whole, than I used to. I was getting into some seriously bad habits of snacking on sweets, carbs and soda any time I wanted to, without thinking of the consequences. The only problem was that those wants were getting more and more frequent. The desire for sugar seemed to be growing, the more I gave myself sugar.

This makes my life so much easier. I'm a busy work at home/stay at home mom, wife, business woman and I feel like dinner is always the thing I just never get time to do. Ever wonder why McDonald’s color scheme is yellow and red? “We are naturally drawn to red, yellow and orange in our dining area or restaurants because psychologically it stimulates us to want to eat -- and eat a lot. As with any new diet, you should consult a professional before committing, as it might not necessarily apply to extenuating health circumstances. It's also helpful to hear an expert's opinion firsthand. As for Smith, she's not entirely sold on the keto diet in the first place. "Some principles of the keto diet can be helpful," she says, such as few refined carbs and sugars. "When done right (more plant-based that is) it can be a great way to get some healthy fats in, but I don't find, especially for women, that it contributes to significant weight loss if that's a goal." While we're on the topic, it's also possible that you might need supplementation to your diet to achieve utmost wellness. "this is case by case, but often, in general, vegans/vegetarians need iron, B complex, b12, extra protein, and potentially zinc and biotin as well," Smith tells us. This is just another reason consulting an expert can be so helpful.
