Making gluten free crackers is easy: substitute the wheat flour with almond flour and sunflower seed flower. You can buy almond flour almost everywhere now, but you will need to grind roasted and unsalted sunflower seeds in a coffee or spice grinder or use a food processor. The combination of the two gluten free nut flours gives the crackers a great consistency and the nutty roasted flavor of the sunflower seeds is so darn tasty.
My weight loss has definitely slowed like it normally does after the first 2 weeks, but I also think I was getting a little too comfortable with my cheat days.  I let them happen more frequently than I should have.  So now, going into the month of February, I’ll be more diligent about not cheating unless it’s the right day, rather than just deciding on a whim to have a cheat day, just because I wanted what everyone else was having.  I’m going to be traveling to Breckenridge, Colorado for a ski trip this month, so I’m sure that the trip will be difficult on me.  At least, I’ll probably burn a lot of it while I’m skiing. #ketoacidosis

Fish oil is the most common source of DHA and EPA, but a good vegan source—and one that, arguably, offers a better concentration of DHA—is algae (which is where those oily fish get their omega-3s from anyway). Okay, I kid, but seriously. I have been skipping breakfast for as long as I can remember. I really only eat it on special occasions, if ever. It makes my calorie goals much easier to attain, and my body is totally cool with it. I don’t often wake up hungry. If you think you could handle waiting until noon to eat for the first time, give intermittent fasting a try. Even harder is to only do one meal a day, OMAD. This isn’t for everyone, especially if you get really hangry really quickly, but it is a great way to cut costs.

Regardless of whether or not you can process gluten, seitan is very high in carbs. I don’t touch it. Also, beans or any fruit other than a few berries. Certainly not a tennis ball worth of fruit and under no circumstances a hockey puck worth of carbs!! Also, if it weren’t for heavy whipping cream, cream cheese and butter, I’d have a terrible time getting the fat and calories I need, so 2 dice worth is no dice. If I followed this advice I would never be in ketosis. I think the author needs more experience.


I hope I’ve shown you that you can have a lot of fun exploring the ins and outs of vegetarian keto. There are tons of good foods and recipes out there just waiting to be tried. Shop local if you can, supporting local farmers is great for the environment. Don’t be afraid of meat substitutes. Go crazy with the cheese. Listen to your body. Most people, upon switching off from keto, say they feel sick after eating carbs, even once they reach their goal weight. Don’t get down if you mess up, just get back on the horse.

To get an idea of what that entails, consider that an average-sized person who eats about 2,000 calories a day will need 100–200g protein daily (on the lower end for strict keto dieters, and on the higher side for those going the Mod Keto route). A three-quarter cup serving of sunflower seeds nets you 25–30g protein, but also costs you 10g of carbs. Almonds have a similar protein-to-carb ratio at 30g to 15g per cup. The key is to accumulate enough protein from vegan sources without letting your carbs creep up too high.

I totally agree with you! There are many other options. It is interesting – you’d think that people who are supposed to be in the health field and are so worried about how we eat, exercising, the environment, etc. don’t know the basics, especially when they are touting the sins of eating meat and fish. By scoping out what's available, you can determine which indulgent treats you want to splurge on and which lean, filler foods will help fill you up. Holding a low-calorie beverage in one hand and a bag in the other will prevent you from mindlessly grazing. "Select one or two hors d'oeuvres that you really want and then wait until the cocktail hour is almost over before putting them on your plate, especially if a meal is to follow," says Matthews-Antosiewicz. You will have to set down what you are holding to fill your plate, which will keep you mindful about what, and how much, you're eating.
This one's kind of sneaky and a little difficult too, depending on your current dietary preference. If you're vegetarian, it's likely that a large portion of your diet is attributed to grains and beans like quinoa, rice, and lentils. According to Smith, these foods contain too many carbohydrates and not enough protein to make them foundational foods for following a keto diet. MCT Oil. This oil is commonly derived from coconut oil and palm oil. It contains medium chain triglycerides, which are saturated fatty acids that skip normal fat digestion and go right to the liver where they are converted into ketones for fuel. Start with a very low number of carbs and slowly add more. For this method, start by eating a maximum of 15g net carbs per day. This is a very, very low number of carbs, even for most on keto.
