By this point you’ve probably been hearing that buzzword around your neighborhood, family, social media or workplace – “keto”. The word is simply short for the ketogenic diet, growing incredibly in the last few years for its powerful ability to help one increase their brain clarity, increase their energy and all the while, decrease their body fat (read more about it here). Many are drawn to its high-fat low-carb ways that allow bacon and eggs to be a part of their regular intake. However, that makes it a challenging diet to adhere to when you’re part of a vegan or plant-based lifestyle. Good news is, it’s a misconception that this is a meat-based diet. The keto diet, while focused on taking in a low amount of carbs and high amount of fats, it’s also dependent on a steady flow of good proteins, as well. Vegans have been thriving for decades with protein alternatives to meat, and fat alternatives to dairy, therefore, the keto diet is no exception. Regardless, many feel lost when trying to even wrap their heads around doing a vegan keto diet, so we are taking a look today at some key foods that are both vegan, and keto diet approved!

Dr. Axe recommends getting no more than 20 percent of your daily calories from plant-based sources of proteins, since eating too much protein will interfere with ketosis. “Most beans and legumes will contribute too many carbs to your diet and too little protein,” he says. “The best sources of low-carb protein are plant-based protein powders (like hemp, brown rice, or pea protein) and fermented soy products like tempeh.” Other plant-based sources of protein in your diet can include nutritional yeast, nuts and seeds, and even vegetables.
Vitamin B12 - B12 is a vitamin required for red blood cell formation, neurological function, and DNA synthesis, so it is pretty important. Unfortunately, it is almost exclusively comes from animal products, so vegetarians might not get as much of it as they need. Vegans definitely will not. Interestingly, vitamin B12 is actually made by animals’ gut bacteria, so you can find vegan-friendly sources. Also interestingly, your body can store B12 for as long as 3 to 5 years before you become deficient, so it may take a while before symptoms show up.

I totally agree with you! There are many other options. It is interesting – you’d think that people who are supposed to be in the health field and are so worried about how we eat, exercising, the environment, etc. don’t know the basics, especially when they are touting the sins of eating meat and fish. Cutting down the forests for palm oil is killing animals and their habitat. That’s a major reason why people go veg and vegan. Thank you for saying this.

I made this last night. I rarely comment on stuff but need to as I often use other people’s comments for inspiration! My partner enjoyed this and I thought it was okay. I halved the recipe, added a chopped serrano, and omitted the celery and chipotle and I think the latter was a mistake. I have some chipolte chili powder I could have subbed but forgot. So I felt like it was missing something in my version. Next time I would cut some of the walnuts in half, too.

“There is no secret. The only thing that I did differently was stay committed. I made a promise to myself not to give up and even when I wanted to quit, or when I messed up I just kept pushing. Thanks for the info. I would be a bit concerned with some of the choices that you outlined. For example, the high amount of non fermented soy which is known to be an excitotoxin because of the release of high concentration of glutamates into the blood stream causing glutamate receptors around the body to fire until exhaustion. These types of foods are associated with a wide range of illnesses as well as helping cancers to spread more quickly around the body. As well your choice of things like canola oil have to be questioned as it is just a marketing ploy for what was known as rapeseed oil which is high in erucic acid which associated with high incidence of fibrotic heart lesions, known as Keshan’s disease, as well as disorders of the central nervous system, lung and prostate cancer, anemia, and constipation. Plus it is virtually impossible to find non GMO versions of canola oil. What is even more striking is your pushing of Splenda which is known to contribute to the development of diabetes!?! You leave me wondering as to whether you’re actually trying to help or are actually trying to market some of these products
Still, Mass is hesitant to endorse this way of consuming. “I don’t see many blessings to going keto vegetarian,” she says. The main challenge is dietary deficiencies.
